While working on this dinosaur post series, I thought it might be nice to add a list of our favorite dinosaur books and resources that we’ve found and used throughout our dinosaur unit study.
Almost every title we found at our local library, and a few of the other books we’ve just collected over time. I’ve also linked each title to amazon, in case you’d like to check out the titles online. In our house, we already have too many books, but if you’d ask our 4 year old, you can never have too many books, especially ones about dinosaurs.
This list is non-fiction and fiction, read-alouds and read-alones, making these perfect for the preschool and Kindergarten age. I based my choices for the top ten off of four main categories: Fun stories, beautiful illustrations, age-appropriate facts, and valuable science or art resources helped these titles make the list.
Dinosaurs by Grace Maccarone (Hello Reader! Level 2) – perfect for readers who are learning to sound out words.
Fossils Tell of Long Ago by Aliki – Fabulous explanations of how fossils are created!
Why Why Why Did Dinosaurs Lay Eggs? by Miles Kelly Publishing – cute, animated illustrations that answer FAQs about dinos.
Dinosaurs! by Gail Gibbons – a classic with interesting factoids about a huge variety of dinosaurs.
Dinosaur Time by Peggy Parish (An Early I Can Read Book) – another great begin-to-read-alone book.
Dinosaur by Roar Publishing (Text by Stephanie Stansbie) – a BEAUTIFUL piece of literature with huge, life-like illustrations. We used this book strictly for the illustrations and poster. The text is great for older kids.
Draw 50 Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Animals by Lee J. Ames – so fun for art time!
Uncover A T-Rex – by Dennis Schatz – an inside look at a T-rex’s anatomy – this is more of a fabulous science resource AND a book all rolled into one.
Dinosaur Days by Linda Manning – rhyming words and repeated day of the week words make for a fun, quick read aloud. The dinosaur glossary at the back was fun for us, too.
How Do Dinosaurs…? Books by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague – we love ALL these titles. The one we own is How Do Dinosaurs Laugh Out Loud (a joke book), but we frequently check out others in this series, too. Perfect for funny, dino-themed read-alouds.
