Basic Drop Biscuits

Sometimes a meal calls for something simple and unadorned. That doesn’t mean it can’t be delicious.

These basic drop biscuits are my from scratch recipe, and I make them at least twice a month. They’re so versatile; add chives and garlic for an Italian twist, or brown sugar and cinnamon for something breakfast-worthy. With gravy, jam, or syrup, these make a beautiful accompaniment to any dish.


2 c. flour {cup-for-cup gluten free flour works too }
11/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. milk
1/4 c. vegetable oil
*1 tsp. white sugar or honey
*extra oil for brushing


Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Combine all ingredients and mix with a wooden spoon until you have a thick, slightly lumpy dough. Drop in large spoonfuls onto a greased baking tray. *Brush with extra oil for a golden brown color. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Remove, allow ten minutes to cool, and enjoy with butter, jam, gravy, or soup.




Or, just plain.

Sometimes less is more. 🙂
